Midnight Honesty at Noon: Get out the Map, Get out the Map…

Great post, Travis! And thanks for mentioning the >100K Project. I would add one thing to #6: don't simply prove him wrong, but then make sure you tell others how you did it! Theatre needs to look to the sciences for an example of how this works: a group of scientists do an experiment, AND THEN THEY PUBLISH THE RESULTS so that other scientists can double0check their results and build on them. In the theatre, we do our shows and then close them without discussing what worked, what didn't, what methods were used. And so nobody can build on what has already been done. As the authors of "Creating Customer Evangelists" say, we need to start "napsterizing" our information!

I think that it's key to be honest and hard with yourself in reviewing a process... but it's also a difficult line to walk when you're doing it publicly. There are lots of folks who don't want to know tha gory details of a post like this. And I will quickly run into casting problem if I honestly review my own work in public....

But that said I will continue to hold myself accountable for everything that I claim as a best practice in indie theatre. If I'm not doing it, why. If I am and it doesn't work, admit it.
